Coastal Erosion and Vegetation Study

We are assessing the role of vegetation on preventing bluff erosion along Wisconsin coasts

Funded by: Wisconsin Coastal Management Program (2023-2024)

Vegetation can play an important role in coastal erosion by improving the stability of the soil.

We use drone LIDAR technology to characterize the structural arrangement of vegetation which can provide a better understanding of the types and properties of vegetation that can improve resistance to coastal erosion.

Combining 3D data of vegetation and bluff erosion from drones, we can pinpoint the areas were vegetation is preventing bluff erosion and develop management strategies to combat the loss of Wisconsin land.
